From Cameo to Close-up Monthly Film Series
THNOC will present a monthly film series in conjunction with the exhibition From Cameo to Close-up: Louisiana in Film one Saturday each month through November 2014.
All screenings will be held at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, and will begin at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.

The movie is loosely based on the 1952 novel A Stone for Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins, which follows a young Brooklyn man as he becomes involved in an underground boxing ring to support his family. Presley plays 19-year-old Danny Fisher in the film version, which is set in the French Quarter, as he spirals downward into the seedy world of local crooks and thieves. Fisher’s fists and his voice help him out of numerous situations, but harsh consequences escalate throughout the film.
On Sunday, June 24, 1973, the largest LGBTQ massacre in the history of the United States occurred at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans, LA. It was the final day of a Pride Weekend celebration, and dozens from at the Metropolitan Community Church, the first gay church founded in the US, went to the Lounge. The attacker coated the stairs with lighter fluid, which made way for an exploding fireball throughout the building and took the lives of 32 people. Despite being the deadliest fire in New Orleans history, few news organizations respectably covered the tragedy.
French Quarter Festivals, Inc. proudly announces the complete music and Satchmo seminar schedule for the 14th annual Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron. The premier American jazz festival dedicated to the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans’ native son, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, the free Satchmo SummerFest takes place Aug 1-3 on the grounds of the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint. An opening reception and keynote conversation will take place Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Hotel Monteleone.
Over 40 Musical Performances
Two stages will feature over 40 contemporary and traditional jazz musicians and brass bands. Friday, August 1st, the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band makes their Satchmo SummerFest debut. Often credited with revitalizing brass bands in New Orleans and around the world, the group will celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2015. Brass bands will be heard throughout the weekend with performances from PresHall Brass, Treme Brass Band, Original Pinettes, and more. Other artists making their Satchmo SummerFest debut are Joe Lastie, Mario Abney and the Abney Effect, Brass-A-Holics, and the Smoking Time Jazz Club.
French Quarter block by block favorite Poppy Tooker did a great show on seafood recently; Gerard Maras (a giant among chefs in our city) shares his boiling technique, Tenney Flynn who is still the best seafood chef in the Quarter, talked about fish handling, and finally Poppy and her guests discussed the ecological issues facing the harvesting community. Seafood is something Poppy knows a great deal about-she is a fisherwoman herself and one of the best champions of fishing families in Louisiana and across North America.
