French Quarter Business Association invites all to “Get Away in the Vieux Carre” this summer

New Orleans, LA – The French Quarter Business Association is promoting its fourth annual “Get Away in the Vieux Carre” campaign, starting June 1st and continuing throughout the summer. French Quarter businesses are offering summer discounts and specials. You’ll be able to dine at a discount, get in 2 for 1 at attractions, and shop till you drop with one of the “Get Away” fans to keep the breeze going.
The association will also give away a complimentary “Get Away to the Vieux Carre” package to three lucky winners at the end of June, July & August. Each package will include a hotel stay, dining gift certificates, retail & attraction vouchers and more. To register for the get-away and to view which businesses are offering specials to guests throughout the summer months visit the FQBA website: http://www.fqba.org

The purpose of this annual campaign is to inspire locals and those close enough to drive in for the day or two to be French Quarter tourists. It’s the perfect time to be reminded why New Orleans and the French Quarter are one of the world’s most famous locales.

To register to win or to get more details on special offers go to http://www.fqba.org/contest. Registrants will also be able to sign up to receive weekly emails with “Get Away” specials and events though out the summer campaign. FQBA posts specials and events through Facebook & Twitter for this campaign as well as throughout the year. It’s a great way to stay in the know about the French Quarter!

“Egg on French please”

I enjoy going to the French Quarter around 7 a.m., so I can beat the groups and characters that wake up and crowd the streets by 11 a.m.
Recently, I started to catalogue the places that one could find decent cheap coffee and/or food before 9 am.

Here’s my partial list, destined to grow:
Cafe Envie
CC’s Coffeehouse, 2 locations
Croissant d’Or
Nelly Deli (Quartermaster Deli)
Matassa’s Grocery
Verti Marte (egg on French masters)
Royal Blend Coffeehouse
A&P (aka Rouse’s Grocery)

Take a hint from the High Line

One area we need to spend a little more time throughout the city, but to me especially in the Quarter, is green space. With millions of tourists walking and spending money in that neighborhood, some beautiful AVAILABLE green space is quite overdue. Public landscaping, short paths in the parks, more tiny green spaces would all help make the Quarter seem like the paradise it should be.
The High Line was a kee-razy idea that a few people put together over a period of years, and now is one of the most admired projects in the city among the NYC residents that I know.
I challenge my fellow activists and citizens to come up with ideas about how we make the Quarter a lush garden. Feel free to contact me about the FQ tree inventory project I am still working on if you want to help.

I have used Roy’s pics before on here. He is an “amateur” photographer whose Quarter genealogy includes the venerable Antoine’s Restaurant. As much as I like to at at Antoine’s (and the Hermes Bar) I’m glad Roy has time to photograph the Quarter. No one does it better.
