Johnny White’s

As someone who had a family member who was associated almost daily with JW’s bar, I have a hard time understanding the confusion over WHICH Johnny White’s were talking about, when people read stories like the current one on the “closing” of the Sports Bar.

Closing Sports Bar
The one on St. Peter is the “real” one for lots of full-time Quarterites, and not just for motorcycle riders. It exists as a home away from home for many, and are treated as family like when the fine folks on St. Peter gave my family member an honored send off when he died last year. Those who frequent the St. Peter one (and probably hung out at Johnny’s Annex too) usually also believe that the “Sports Bar’ on Orleans is pretty bad and not one to hang out in with friends. It, like a lot of things directly on Bourbon, is too full of, well lets just say there’s too much potential for a bad time.

there are 4 places with Johnny White’s name on them in the Quarter and the ones managed by the family of Johnny White are the three BESIDES the Sports Bar. The family is taking control of that space again and probably reopening it slightly altered, which is fine with lots of us.

There. hope that helps. Now, let’s get a drink.

King Creole Returns

Dust off your blue suede shoes and head down to the Quarter, as the New Orleans Film Society, the Louisiana State Museum, and the Louisiana Museum Foundation present an outdoor screening of the classic Elvis film King Creole. About the film: Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, and Walter Matthau star in this 1958 film that tells the story of a nineteen-year-old who gets mixed up with crooks and involved with two women. The film was critically and commercially successful and included the song “Hard-Headed Woman,” which became a number one hit for Elvis. He later said that King Creole was his favorite acting role.

“Egg on French please”

I enjoy going to the French Quarter around 7 a.m., so I can beat the groups and characters that wake up and crowd the streets by 11 a.m.
Recently, I started to catalogue the places that one could find decent cheap coffee and/or food before 9 am.

Here’s my partial list, destined to grow:
Cafe Envie
CC’s Coffeehouse, 2 locations
Croissant d’Or
Nelly Deli (Quartermaster Deli)
Matassa’s Grocery
Verti Marte (egg on French masters)
Royal Blend Coffeehouse
A&P (aka Rouse’s Grocery)

Take a hint from the High Line

One area we need to spend a little more time throughout the city, but to me especially in the Quarter, is green space. With millions of tourists walking and spending money in that neighborhood, some beautiful AVAILABLE green space is quite overdue. Public landscaping, short paths in the parks, more tiny green spaces would all help make the Quarter seem like the paradise it should be.
The High Line was a kee-razy idea that a few people put together over a period of years, and now is one of the most admired projects in the city among the NYC residents that I know.
I challenge my fellow activists and citizens to come up with ideas about how we make the Quarter a lush garden. Feel free to contact me about the FQ tree inventory project I am still working on if you want to help.
