Joy returning to Canal Street sooner or later

As a French Quarter teenager, I might have been the last of those who saw first-run movies at the Joy Theater. It gave downtown living another facet, long before Canal Place and even way before Black Pearl’s now-defunct Uptown Square movie house. Yes we had Prytania, but that was about it.

I welcome more activity to the American Sector to build more everyday life for the French Quarter.

Rent decrease for the wealthy?

Even though I titled it in that way, I do agree that they should not be paying market rate. I have seen the type of maintenance done on these and it ain’t pretty…
Other FQ apartments at market rate have updated heating and cooling, new electric, and often pools or private green space for their use.

It remains vitally important that people live in the city center and its center.

Cyclists ticketed in French Quarter.

Puzzling the way that our NOPD is attacking lawlessness in the French Quarter. Crime is widespread by local accounts, and yet the main issue has become the ticketing of two-wheeled, human-powered indicators of a healthy city. No doubt we need education about what constitutes lawful cycling, but starting with tickets as the first line of communication seems unduly prescriptive.

That the diversity of use in the French Quarter is the reason for its vibrancy is the belief of this blog; therefore, we hope for some sanity to return to the 8th District by getting itself almost entirely on 2 wheels, talking and patrolling before ticketing anyone and maybe focusing more on activities that actually beget criminal behavior rather than those that actually may prevent it.
And help to reduce the friction between the wealthy and those who serve their needs.

May 27th, 2011, via Nola Anarcha:
80 days after the NOPD broke its own laws to evict the Iron Rail from its location in the ARC at 511 Marigny, New Orleans’ only anarchist bookstore and library has returned…but this time the black flag has unfurled in the French Quarter!Yesterday the Iron Rail opened its doors onto 503 Barracks next to Decatur, across the street from local coffee shop Envie’s, and next door to our friends at Gnome and Riot Supply Co. Well into the night food and wine was served and art displayed. Old and new faces streamed in and out of the boutique as folks celebrated the new space and satiated their suppressed appetites for rebellious readings.
